Key Highlights:

  • Total kharif area at 1,086.31 lakh hectares: This is lower than the 1,104 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year, as per Agriculture Ministry data as on September 4.
  • Rice area down amid deficient monsoon: Rice coverage fell to 421.82 lakh hectares from 438.19 lakh hectares, with the decline linked to a weaker monsoon and El Nino's impact.
  • Pulses coverage rises: Area under pulses like urad and moong increased to 117.13 lakh hectares, up 1.83 lakh hectares from last year, aided by their lower water requirement.
  • Jute and mesta area up: Coverage rose to 6.34 lakh hectares from 6.24 lakh hectares, driven by gains in Bihar and West Bengal.
  • Oilseeds, cotton and sugarcane all dip slightly: Oilseeds, cotton and sugarcane areas each recorded modest year-on-year declines, mainly due to reductions in Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar and Uttarakhand.

New Delhi: The total area sown under kharif crops in the current season across the country is estimated at 1,086.31 lakh hectares as on September 4 this year, compared with the corresponding figure of 1,104 lakh hectares in the same period last year, data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on Tuesday showed.

Rice Area Declines On Weaker Monsoon

The official figures show that the area under rice is 421.82 lakh hectares this year, compared with 438.19 lakh hectares during the same period last year. The decline in the area sown is attributed to the deficient monsoon this year following the adverse impact of the El Nino weather pattern. Overall, the decline in rice area coverage is mainly attributable to substantial reductions in Karnataka, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.
