MEA: 'We are committed to the return of Indian fishermen arrested in Sri Lanka', Jaishankar's reply to Tamil Nadu CM
MEA: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in a letter to Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, said that the Government of India is trying for the safe return of all the fishermen stranded in Sri Lanka. He said that the safety of all Indian fishermen is our top priority.
The Sri Lankan Navy detained ten fishermen from India a few days ago for illegally fishing in the island nation's maritime area. Now, all these Indian fishermen will be booked in connection with the death of a Sri Lankan Navy sailor. Many fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been detained in various actions taken by the Sri Lankan Navy so far. Over this matter, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote a letter to the Foreign Minister of India, S Jaishankar. Now, India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has also responded to the letter sent by Stalin and informed.
In the letter, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar wrote that the Government of India is trying to bring back all the fishermen trapped in Sri Lanka safely. The Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 40 Indian fishermen in different operations," said the Foreign Minister. Of these, 34 fishermen are in judicial custody, whereas six other fishermen undergo sentences in Sri Lankan jails. The Indian Embassy in Colombo and the Consulate in Jaffna are working on the early release of all the fishermen.
We assure you that the safety of all Indian fishermen is our top priority.' The Sri Lankan Navy now says that during the action on Indian ships, the sailor of Sri Lanka was attacked. He was critically injured in the process. Further information adds that the Sri Lankan Navy sailor succumbed to his injuries being treated at a hospital in Jaffna. Ten fishermen from India have been arrested in this case. All the fishermen, according to the Sri Lankan Navy, had come from Tamil Nadu to fish in the island nation's maritime area.
