Honda Vehicles reports serious engine problems in US; About 14 lakh cars are under investigation
Honda Cars: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it is starting an investigation of 14 lakh Honda vehicles after receiving complaints of serious engine problems.
On Monday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that they are starting an investigation of 14 lakh Honda vehicles after receiving reports of serious engine problems. In November 2023, Honda recalled 2,49,000 vehicles with 3.5-liter V6 engines in the United States. The Japanese automaker said a manufacturing defect in the engine crankshaft could cause the connecting rod bearing to wear out prematurely and stop which can lead to engine failure.
The US Auto Safety Agency said it has 173 reports of this problem in various Honda and Acura vehicles from the 2016-2020 model years. The NHTSA investigation is to assess the severity of the problem and determine whether vehicles not included in the 2023 recall should also be covered.
Honda said Monday that it is aware of the investigation and "has already been in contact with the agency on this topic and will continue to cooperate with NHTSA through the inquiry process."
Honda initiated an investigation of the issue as early as 2020 and pursued the problem for a number of years before making the recall announcement.
The automaker had claimed last year that it had 1,450 warranty claims related to the recall. The dealers are checking the vehicles for this fault under this recall and replacing or repairing the engines if required.
The NHTSA said all 173 reports "demonstrate failures that have characteristics consistent with those addressed in the 2023 recall" but are not covered. The involved vehicles include model-year 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2018-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Honda Pilot, 2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline, and 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey vehicles.
