After the Bengaluru accident, Karnataka CM's big announcement, the country's second-largest stadium will be built here
India's 2nd Biggest Stadium: 11 people died in a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the victory procession after Royal Challengers Bangalore won the IPL 2025 title. Taking lessons from that incident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has approved the stadium project with a capacity of 80,000 spectators.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has approved the Karnataka Housing Board's plan to develop a world-class sports complex at Surya City, Bommasandra. This complex will include an 80,000-capacity cricket stadium, making it the second largest in the country after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The project follows the tragic stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the victory ceremony of Royal Challengers Bangalore's on June 4, which resulted in 11 fatalities.
The Rs 1,650 crore project will be entirely funded by the KHB and cover 100 acres. In addition to the cricket ground, the complex will feature facilities for eight indoor and outdoor sports, modern gyms, training centers, swimming pools, guest houses, hostels, hotels, and a convention center for international events. It may resemble the new National Cricket Academy (NCA) Centre of Excellence built by the BCCI in Bengaluru.
The Justice John Michael Cunha Commission, which investigated the Bengaluru stampede, concluded that the 32,000-capacity stadium spanning only 17 acres was inadequate for large events. The commission recommended moving such events to larger venues with better amenities and parking.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) faced immediate criticism after the report, leading to the shift of the Maharaja Trophy 2025 T20 tournament to Mysore due to lack of police approval. This has raised concerns about hosting five Women's World Cup matches later this year and the 2026 IPL matches at the same venue.
