SRH Captaincy Update: Ishan Kishan Set to Replace Injured Pat Cummins in IPL 2025
SRH New Captain: Sunrisers Hyderabad may appoint Ishan Kishan as their new captain for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Reports indicate that he has been preferred over Abhishek Sharma to replace the injured Pat Cummins.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) may have a new captain for the IPL 2025 season as Pat Cummins is injured and may not play. There are reports that the SRH management has discussed the replacement for the Australian captain. Ishan Kishan, the left-handed batsman for the Indian cricket team, is reportedly the frontrunner for the captain’s role in the 19th season. The 27-year-old batsman performed extremely well for the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2026. There are chances that Ishan could replace the injured Pat Cummins and that Abhishek Sharma could be his vice-captain.
Earlier reports had suggested that Abhishek could also replace the Australian captain. The Australian fast bowler has been suffering from a back injury since July 2025. He last played in an Ashes match in December, but has not played since.
He missed the 2026 T20 World Cup due to the injury, and Cricket Australia has not yet cleared him to return to cricket. According to a TOI report, since it is uncertain when Cummins will join SRH, the 2016 IPL champions discussed among themselves and decided that Ishan was the best choice to take over the captaincy.

Ishan has not yet captained in the IPL, but he has considerable captaincy experience. He led India to the final of the 2016 Under-19 ODI World Cup. He has captained Jharkhand in a total of 79 matches across all formats. He recently led Jharkhand to its first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title. Based on this impressive performance, he was selected for the T20 World Cup.
Abhishek also has captaincy experience in domestic cricket. He has captained Punjab in a total of 31 matches across all formats. However, he lacks a significant captaincy record or track record compared to Ishan. Ishan's win percentage in T20 captaincy is 79.31.
If this report is accurate, Ishan will make his IPL captaincy debut on March 28 in the first match of the 2026 season against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He will also be the 11th captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad and the first Indian captain since Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who captained the team in 2023.
