Recently, an Uber user from Delhi won a case against the ride-hailing app. In this case, he did not provide the cab on time, due to which he missed his flight. Addressed by the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Uber was directed to pay a compensation of Rs 54,000 to the complainant in this case. This complaint was filed in 2022 when the user missed his flight due to the non-arrival of the booked Uber cab. Which the court termed a 'deficiency in service' and cited the lack of accountability of the company.

According to media reports, the incident took place in November 2022 when Upendra Singh booked an Uber cab at 3:15 am to reach Delhi airport for a flight to Indore. But despite the booking, none of the cabs arrived on time. And despite Singh's repeated attempts to reach out, there was no response from the company.

Faced with the delay, Singh and his wife decided to hire a local taxi and despite the delay, they reached the airport by 5:15 am. However, by then, the couple had missed their flight. The missed flight further disrupted their travel plans. This left them with little time to spend with family in Indore as their return tickets to Delhi were already booked.

Frustrated by the lack of a response from Uber, Singh took the matter further by sending a legal notice to the company on November 23, 2022. However, there was no response to the notice either, following which he had to file a formal complaint with the Delhi District Consumer Commission. According to reports, the district commission has now ruled in Singh's favor, holding Uber responsible for "deficiency in service".

Later, Uber filed an appeal against the verdict with the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. However, the state commission upheld its earlier decision, stressing that Uber neither provided a satisfactory explanation for its failure nor produced evidence to justify the lapse.

In its November 11 order, the commission remarked, "As a service provider facilitating the transportation process, the appellant (Uber) has an obligation to ensure that the services are provided without any unnecessary delay or inconvenience. Its inability to discharge this responsibility represents a clear deficiency in service and the appellant must be held liable for the loss caused to the complainant."

The court ordered Uber to pay Singh an amount of Rs 24,100 as compensation, which will cover the monetary loss and the inconvenience caused apart from Rs 30,000 to cover mental distress and litigation costs incurred in this process. However, so far Uber has not released any statement regarding the whole matter publicly.
