South Africa strengthened its grip on the game by taking a lead of 216 runs at stumps on Sunday, on the second day of the first Test being played versus Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. South Africa has managed to post 49 runs for losing a single wicket in its second innings. Tony de Georgi was unbeaten on 22, and Wiaan Mulder on 25. Matthew Breetzke was sent back after getting just one run.

Earlier, Zimbabwe's first innings were reduced to 251 runs despite Sean Williams' 137 runs. Captain Craig Ervine was the second top scorer with 36 runs. Seven batsmen could not reach double figures. South Africa got a lead of 167 runs on the basis of the first innings. For South Africa, Wiaan Mulder took four wickets, captain Keshav Maharaj took two, and Kodi Yusuf took three wickets.

Keshav Maharaj completed 200 wickets in Test cricket as soon as he took his first wicket of the match in the form of Craig Ervine. He is the first spinner to take 200 Test wickets for South Africa. Earlier, South Africa declared their first innings on the first day's score of 418 runs for nine wickets. 19-year-old Luan Dre Pretorius, playing his first Test for South Africa, scored 153 runs off 160 balls. Apart from this, Corbin Bosch scored an unbeaten 100. Dewald Brevis also played an innings of 51 runs.

South Africa has lost only one wicket, and its lead has reached 216 runs. If its lead goes above 400 runs, then it can be difficult for Zimbabwe. Keshav Maharaj is captaining South Africa in this two-Test series. Regular captain Temba Bavuma is not a part of the series due to injury.
