Wimbledon: 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams' singles comeback at Wimbledon 2026 ended in the first round. 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint recorded the biggest win of her career, defeating Serena Williams 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 in a thrilling three-set match on Centre Court.
Serena Williams, who has been victorious in 23 Grand Slam events, played singles at Wimbledon 2026 but got eliminated in the first round. Maya Joint from Australia achieved the victory of her life in an intense three-setter at the Centre Court of the All England Club. It was the first victory for Maya Joint in Wimbledon. Maya Joint made it to Wimbledon after losing 11 successive matches in the tour since January. She is slated to face Alexandra Eala in the second round.
Maya won the first set 6-3 against Serena. In the second set, Serena saved her first match point before winning the set via a tiebreak and levelling the scoreline. However, she got a decent start in the decider. Nevertheless, the youthful Australian player came back and broke Serena five times to win the match. Moreover, Maya Joint has served 10 aces.
44-year-old Serena played her last singles match at the 2022 US Open. Following this, she returned to the singles court at Wimbledon after a gap of 1,397 days. She became the second-oldest player to play Wimbledon women's singles in the Open Era. Previously, 47-year-old Martina Navratilova achieved this feat in 2004.
