President of France, Emmanuel Macron, backs Kylian Mbappé and claims that he has won another battle by standing up to racism. This came after Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla made racially offensive remarks on him. She referred to him as a “colonized Cameroonian who wants to present himself as French” and claimed that he is arrogant, nouveau riche, and ugly.
In addition, Celeste went ahead to claim that France’s victory was just luck, and that he looked nervous and terrified during the match as well as his team mates. Kylian took offense at the comments and referred to her as a “vile woman.”
Macron wrote on social media, "Another goal by Kylian Mbappé. This time against racism. My full support is with him. When words offend, our values respond: dignity, respect, and fraternity." This World Cup match featured aggressive and physical football between the two teams. Tensions were also visible between the players at times during the match. After the match, Mbappé criticized the Paraguayan players' tactics of playing a dirty game, following which Amarilla made controversial comments against the French team and Mbappé on social media.
