Asian Games 2026: Asha Ilango Finishes Fourth in Triple Jump After Losing Bronze on Countback
Asian Games: Asha Elango equaled China's Li Yi's record at the Asian Games with a jump of 13.83 meters, but the countback rule forced her to settle for fourth place, missing out on the bronze medal. Meanwhile, Niharika Vashisht finished 10th with a best effort of 13.00 meters, failing to secure a spot in the top eight.
Asha Elango from India failed to win a medal in women's triple jump at the 2026 Asian Games held in Aichi on Thursday. The athlete tied the record set by China's Li Yi, which is 13.83 meters, but ended up in fourth place due to the countback system. Champion of last years' tournament Sharifa Davronova from Uzbekistan successfully defended her title with her personal best score of 14.35 meters. China's Huang Yingying took the silver medal after a 14.12 meters performance, while bronze medalist was Li Yi who jumped 13.83 meters.
Li Yi and Asha Elango had the same performance – 13.83 meters. However, Li Yi's second best result was better than Asha's on countback, which allowed her to get a medal. To achieve the bronze medal, Asha Elango had to jump more than 13.79 meters in her last attempt, but she did only 13.59 meters.
Asha started well with a jump of 13.43 meters. Her second attempt was a foul, but she returned to medal contention with a distance of 13.83 meters in her third attempt. Asha then jumped 13.63 meters, 13.65 meters, and 13.59 meters in her final three attempts. However, she could not improve on her third attempt of 13.83 meters. Asha's season best was 13.89 meters, which she had recorded before the Asian Games.
