Paris Olympics: Aman registered a special achievement in his name with the bronze medal, leaving Sindhu behind in this matter
Paris Olympics: Aman defeated Puerto Rico's Darian Toi Cruz in the bronze medal match played on Friday and gave the country the sixth medal in the Paris Games. India has so far won a total of six medals including one silver and five bronze medals.
Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat has registered a special achievement in his name by winning the bronze medal in the men's 57 kg freestyle category with a great performance. The same Aman became the youngest Indian player to win an Olympic medal and in this case, he left behind two-time Olympic medalist female badminton player PV Sindhu. Aman defeated Puerto Rico's Darian Toi Cruz in the bronze medal play-off on Friday and gave the country its sixth medal in the Games. India has so far won a total of six medals, which includes one silver and five bronze medals, and is one short of matching its best performance of seven in the Tokyo Olympics.
Aman had turned 21 just last month, and he became only the first player to win an Olympic medal at such a young age. The record was earlier held by Sindhu who had won the silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics. At the time of winning the silver in women's singles, Sindhu was 21 years one month, and 14 days old. On the same note, Aman became an Olympic medalist at the age of 21 years 24 days. Other badminton players include Saina Nehwal, who won a bronze medal at the age of 22 years four months and 18 days during the 2012 London Olympics. It was a feat she shared with Manu, the 19-year-old wrestler, who won two medals in the Paris Olympics at the age of 22 years five months and 10 days.
Aman was the only male wrestler from India to participate in the Paris Olympics. However, he did not disappoint and maintained a streak of winning medals in the Olympics. India has been winning medals in wrestling in every Olympics since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Sushil Kumar won bronze in 2008, Sushil won silver Yogeshwar Dutt won bronze in 2012, Sakshi Malik won bronze in 2016, Ravi Dahiya won silver and Bajrang Punia won bronze in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This was Aman's first Olympics and he won a bronze medal in his very first Olympics. In this way, India opened its account in wrestling at the Paris Olympics. He brought happiness to India which was in despair after Vinesh Phogat was disqualified.
There were high expectations from Anant Panghal (53 kg), Anshu Malik (57 kg), and Nisha Dahiya (68 kg), but all these women wrestlers failed to reach the medal round in their respective categories. On the other hand, Vinesh Phogat (50 kg) was successful in reaching the final, but before the gold medal match, her weight was found to be 100 grams more due to which she was disqualified. In this way, India lost the golden opportunity to win the gold medal.
