The Nepal government has taken a significant step by cracking down on social media platforms in the country. The government has ordered the blocking of a total of 26 social media websites, including Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter). This action was taken against companies that failed to register under government rules.

The government states that users with fake IDs used these platforms to spread hatred, rumors, and commit cybercrimes. This was increasing unrest and anti-social activities in society.

Nepal's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology spokesperson Gajendra Thakur told news agency ANI that the ministry had set a deadline for all social media companies to register in Nepal. However, many companies did not comply.

He further said, "In the meeting held this afternoon, it has been decided to order the Nepal Telecommunication Authority to block 26 social media platforms with immediate effect."

After this decision, internet users in Nepal are unable to access major platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and X. The government believes this step will help curb cybercrimes and promote peace and harmony in society.
