Nepal is once again on high alert. Just days after the devastating August 26 flash floods that left towns in ruins and hundreds of lives lost, the country's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) on Sunday morning issued a fresh flood warning, cautioning that the water level in the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa has risen further. The message from the authority is unambiguous — the danger has not passed. In some ways, a new one may be building.
The NDRRMA's Sunday morning notice was direct and wide-reaching.
"All those engaged in search, rescue and relief operations in affected areas, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan districts, those staying along the riversides, and all other concerned are requested to remain alert," the authority said.
The warning covers a broad geographic corridor — precisely because the Bhote Koshi's rise doesn't stay contained to one district. Its impact travels downstream through connected river systems, making early warning coordination essential.
The Trishuli Rise Downstream
The Flood Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has already registered the ripple effect. The water level in the Trishuli River — downstream of Bhote Koshi in the Galchhi area of Dhading district — has risen 3 metres above usual levels.
Earlier on August 26, the flood was recorded above 14 metres in Dhading, according to the Flood Forecasting Division. In context, that number captures how quickly and how severely water surges from Bhote Koshi can translate into downstream disaster.
"There is not much risk as people have already moved away from the riverside areas," an official of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said — a small piece of reassurance amid an otherwise tense situation, reflecting the lessons learned from the August 26 disaster.
The Lhende Khola Threat
At the heart of the fresh warning sits a specific and alarming risk — the natural obstruction of the Lhende Khola, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River. The NDRRMA has been repeatedly cautioning that a heavy new flood remains possible because of the current obstruction pattern in the region.
"Based on a preliminary analysis of a satellite image taken at 11:44 a.m. on August 27, 2026, it appears that the flow of the Lhende Khola has been obstructed in an upstream area approximately 18 kilometres from the Rasuwagadhi border point, resulting in the formation of a lake covering approximately 0.11 square kilometres," the authority said in a statement late Saturday.
That lake — formed by debris obstruction — now sits as a natural dam. And natural dams in high-altitude Himalayan terrain are notoriously unstable.
"As there remains a risk that the natural dam holding back the lake could burst, potentially triggering another major flood, residents in downstream areas and all concerned are requested to remain alert and exercise extreme caution," the NDRRMA added.
The authority also flagged that a preliminary assessment indicates additional lakes may have formed in the area — a possibility that raises the stakes even further.

Even as fresh threats emerge, the toll of the August 26 disaster continues to expand. NDRRMA has confirmed that the flood has so far claimed 675 lives, while 2,498 people remain out of contact — including 589 foreigners.
