Road Accident: Many people become victims of road accidents in India. In such a situation, more than 10 lakh cases of insurance claims for motor vehicle accidents have been pending during the last five years. This figure is for the entire country, in which an amount of Rs 80,455 crore is involved.

Many types of information keep coming to light regarding road accidents in the country. In such a situation, it has come to light through RTI that 10,46,163 motor accidents, which are claims worth Rs 80,455 crore, are pending across the country. These insurance cases are continuously increasing. This information has come out from RTI during the year 2018-19 to 2022-23. 

Supreme Court lawyer KC Jain was given this information through RTI in April 2024 by IRDAI i.e. Insurance Regulatory and 

IRDAI, or the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, provided this information to Supreme Court attorney KC Jain via a request for information (RTI) in April 2024. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has released information on pending motor vehicle accident claims nationwide, broken down by state and district.

Whether the Central Government has taken any action in the past five years in response to unresolved auto claims. It is information if it has been raised. The number of pending claims for motor vehicle accidents during the financial years 2018–19, 2019–20, 2020–21, 2021–22, and 2022–23 is 9,09,166, 9,39,160, 10, 08,332, 10,39,323, and 10,46,163, according to the information provided by IRDAI. At the same time, the number of claims during this period was Rs 2,713 crore, Rs 61,051 crore, Rs 70,722 crore, Rs 74,718 crore, and Rs 80,455 crore respectively. 

According to IRDAI, it does not collect information on motor third-party claims on a district and state basis. At the same time, the road safety activist expressed concern that it takes an average of 4 years for the victim of a road accident to get financial help. According to the information of IRDA, 10,39,323 new cases of motor accidents were reported in 2022-23. But settlement was made in only 29 percent of these cases. It took almost 4 years to fulfill these claims. Jain filed a civil wit petition in the Supreme Court saying that the application was given regarding the delayed decision and financial assistance to the victims of road accidents. It has been suggested that financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh should be given in serious cases and Rs 2.50 lakh in case of injuries.
