India overtook China in smartphone exports, sent most phones to America
Made in India: Smartphone companies are rapidly changing their manufacturing strategies due to the ongoing tariff and trade policy tensions between the US and China.

India surpassed China to lead the list of nations shipping smartphones to the US for the first time. This has been made possible primarily because of Apple's growing iPhone production in India. Smartphones shipped from India to the US increased by 240 percent in the second quarter (Q2) 2025, as per Tazo data of research company Canalys (currently a part of Omdia).
The proportion of smartphones exported out of India to the US has now reached 44%, up from just 13% last year. China's proportion has dipped to 25%, down from 61% in Q2 2024. The reason for this shift comes on the back of the swift development of India's position in Apple's supply chain. Apple is now getting its standard models like the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 manufactured in India on a large scale. Even some iPhone 16 Pro models are being assembled in India, though the main production of the Pro models still relies on China.
Other brands like Samsung and Motorola are also now shipping smartphones to the US from India, though Samsung is still more dependent on Vietnam and Motorola has a large part of its supply chain in China. The contribution of these two brands is much smaller than that of Apple.
