There is good news for central employees. If they need leave for any personal work, then they can remain on leave not for a week or two but for the whole month. Union Minister of State for Personnel Dr. Jitendra Singh has clarified that if an employee needs leave for personal reasons, then he can remain on leave for 30 days. The good thing is that this also includes taking care of elderly parents. This facility is provided under the Central Civil Services (Leave) Rules 1972, effective from June 1, 1972. This response was given by the Union Minister of State for Personnel to a question raised in the Rajya Sabha.

This regulation holds for most of the Central Government employees, but railway staff and All India Services (AIS) members are exempted from it. Separate regulations have been formulated for them. Under the terms of these regulations, a government servant is eligible for 30 days of Earned Leave for each year. Besides this, they receive 20 days of Half Pay Leave, 8 days of Casual Leave and two Restricted Holidays.

All these leaves can be used by the employees for personal reasons, such as parental care, family responsibilities or health needs. Apart from this, facilities like Maternity Leave, Paternity Leave, Child Care Leave, Study Leave, Special Disability Leave, Hospital Leave, Departmental Leave are also available to the employees.

The government has ensured that the leaves are credited in advance to the leave account of the employees in January and July every year. When the employees take leave, it is deducted from the same account. However, certain types of leaves - such as special casual leave or compensation leaves - are not deducted from the general leave account.

The Government also issues executive instructions from time to time which govern casual leaves, restricted leaves, special casual leaves and compensatory leaves. The purpose of these instructions is to ensure that employees are able to avail the necessary leave easily without affecting their regular leaves.
