'I am also a victim', Vice President Dhankhar said on questions raised on protocol by CJI Gavai

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar stood behind CJI Justice BR Gavai in raising the protocol issue in Mumbai. He expressed that this is an extremely important matter. We should trust that protocol, it's basic to adhere to it. He added that I thank the CJI for bringing up this issue. I myself am also a victim of this sort. You might have seen the image of the President and Prime Minister, but not that of the Vice President.

Speaking at an event in Delhi, Dhankhar added that this morning he recalled something extremely significant in the country and that is not for us. We need to stick to the protocol. A very high position is accorded to the Chief Justice of the country and to the protocol. When he hinted at this, it was not about his person, it was for his office. I am confident that this needs to be remembered by everyone.

Dhankhar's comments on protocol came after Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai expressed his displeasure on Sunday. In fact, Justice Gavai had reached Maharashtra for the first time after being promoted to the top judicial post. CJI Gavai, who took oath on May 14, was in Mumbai for a felicitation ceremony organized by the Maharashtra and Goa Bar Council. During this, none of the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, the Director General of Police, or the Mumbai Police Commissioner was present for him. Hours after the CJI's remarks, all three top officials were present when CJI Gavai visited Chaityabhoomi, the cremation site of BR Ambedkar in Dadar, to pay tribute to the eminent social reformer and the chief architect of the Constitution of India.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday reiterated the words of Chief Justice of India BR Gavai. He said that following the protocol is fundamental. He expressed grief over the absence of a photo of the Vice President next to the President and the Prime Minister. He said that he too is a victim of protocol in a way. You have seen the photographs of the President and the Prime Minister, but not of the Vice President. Once I step down, I will ensure that my successor has a photograph.
