Himanta Biswa Sarma Says Polygamy Will Be Banned in Assam, Regardless of Community
Polygamy: CM Himanta also stated that action against illegal activities, those with suspicious identities, and those encroaching on government land will be intensified. He said, "The eviction drive will continue, polygamy will end—no one can stop me."
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday made sharp statements on two major political and social issues: polygamy and electoral politics. He categorically announced that polygamy wouldn't be allowed in the state, irrespective of the community. He also accused the Congress of extorting money for election tickets and said the party relied on Mian-dominated seats.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said, "Polygamy will end, regardless of community. Complaints come from all communities-Hindus and Muslims. We will not spare those who harass the first wife."
He clarified that polygamy is not an issue specific to any one group, but its prevalence has been reported in some communities. Sarma said, "This is not just a Miya issue. Many men in Hindu society also marry twice. Therefore, action will be taken equally against everyone."

The Chief Minister also announced that action will be intensified against those involved in illegal activities, suspicious identities, and those encroaching on government land. He said, "The eviction drive will continue, polygamy will end-no one can stop me."
Sarma also launched a scathing attack on the Congress party on electoral issues. He alleged that the Congress party is relying on only 22 seats in the upcoming assembly elections and is using Miya-dominated seats as "oxygen." He said, "The Congress is demanding Rs 1 crore in advance and Rs 3 crore later for tickets from candidates. People from several seats-Srijangram, Bagheria-Mandia, Samaria, and Dalgaon-have told me this themselves."
Sarma also claimed that welfare schemes run by his government, such as Arunodoi and women entrepreneurship, have reached the Miya community equally, and that the government has no problems with the community.
He said, "The only problem arises when some people illegally occupy government land." Following these statements by the Chief Minister, issues of polygamy and identity have once again become the focus of the electoral debate, adding new heat to Assamese politics.
