Government to set up 72,300 EV charging stations across the country, guidelines issued

The central government has allocated ₹2,000 crore out of ₹10,900 crore under the PM e-Drive scheme for the establishment of public EV charging stations, totaling approximately 72,300 charging stations nationwide. Government premises will receive a 100% subsidy on charging infrastructure and equipment, while up to 80% subsidy is available for other locations.

The central government has come out with the guidelines for setting up of about 72,300 public EV charging points in the country, with an expenditure of ₹2,000 crore under the ₹10,900 crore PM e-Drive initiative.

These guidelines suggest a subsidy pattern to enable the installation of EV charging infrastructure at different sites. Government buildings, offices, residential complexes, hospitals, and educational institutions will be subsidized 100% for infrastructure and EV charging equipment if they offer charging facilities to everyone.

For locations located along cities and highways owned by the state or central governments or their public sector undertakings, they will receive a subsidy of 80 percent of the infrastructure cost and 70 percent of the electric vehicle supply equipment cost.

In addition, 80 percent subsidy will be provided on upstream infrastructure along highways and expressways, as well as in cities- streets, shopping malls, market complexes, etc. 80 percent subsidy will be provided on the infrastructure for battery swapping charging stations installed at any location.

As per the norms, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited will act as the implementing agency for setting up electric vehicle public charging stations.
