From Pageantry to Purpose: Alisshaa’s Journey as an Education Activist

A chance visit to a remote village years ago ignited a spark within Alisshaa Ohri—a spark that transformed into a blazing inferno of passion for education and social justice. During her visit, she encountered the harsh reality of ‘Nata-pratha,’ a tradition that allowed men to have extramarital affairs and even sell their wives. Alisshaa’s heart ached for the women caught in this oppressive web, their voices muffled, their dignity trampled upon.

Feeling a strong need to act and really wanting to make things better, Alisshaa decided it was time to do something about it. She embarked on a mission to expose the dark side of this so-called ritual, documenting the stories of the women who had been subjected to its cruelty.

She launched the digital platform ‘Shakti,’ a powerful tool to empower women and protect them from the clutches of harmful traditions. The name ‘Shakti,’ meaning ‘the inner strength of women,’ perfectly encapsulates the essence of her mission. Shakti’s mission extends far beyond literacy; it encompasses fostering self-belief, nurturing ambition, and empowering women to become masters of their destinies. Through its multifaceted programmes, Shakti inspires women to recognise their worth, break free from societal constraints, and pursue their dreams with unwavering determination.

Education, she asserts, is the cornerstone of financial freedom, the key that unlocks opportunities that would otherwise remain inaccessible. In the harsh reality of life, Alisshaa believes that the absence of education often leads to unimaginable cruelty. Those women trapped in oppressive systems wouldn’t endure such hardships if they were given the chance to be educated and empowered. It’s not just a want; it’s a pressing need of the hour. Empowered with knowledge, these women could script their own destinies, escaping the clutches of enduring hardship.
