Fertilizer Subsidy Boost: PM Modi Says Step Will Strengthen Farmer Welfare
PM Modi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the increased subsidy on phosphorus and sulfur fertilizers for the 2025-26 Rabi season as a major step in the interest of farmers. The central government has allocated a subsidy of ₹37,952 crore. The subsidy on phosphate has been fixed at ₹47.96 and on sulfur at ₹2.87 per kilogram.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the decision of the central government to raise subsidy rates on phosphatic and potassic fertilizers for the Rabi season of 2025-26. He said this decision is a major step towards farmer welfare and reducing agricultural costs. The central government's decision to increase subsidies on phosphorus- and sulfur-based fertilizers will provide relief to farmers nationwide.
On Tuesday, the Union Cabinet approved nutrient-based subsidy rates. Under this decision, the government has allocated a subsidy of ₹37,952 crore to provide affordable fertilizers to farmers. Prime Minister Modi said on Twitter (formerly Twitter) that we are committed to the welfare of our farmer brothers and sisters. Subsidies on phosphorus and potash fertilizers during the Rabi season will increase farmers' income and reduce their costs.

With the new rates, the subsidy on phosphate has been raised from ₹43.60 per kilogram to ₹47.96 per kilogram. The subsidy on sulfur has also been raised from ₹1.77 per kilogram to ₹2.87 per kilogram. But there is no change in the subsidy rate on nitrogen (N) and potash (K). The rates will come into effect from October 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
Rabi season sowing has already begun in many parts of the country. Crops such as wheat, gram, mustard, and lentils are primarily sown during this season. The increased fertilizer subsidy will provide farmers with nutrient-rich fertilizers at lower costs, which is expected to improve yields. The government believes this move will also boost the rural economy.
