Onion Price Today: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai Rates Remain Above ₹50/kg Despite ₹35 Subsidised Sale
Onion Prices: Despite the government's subsidized sale price of Rs 35 per kilogram, onion prices have reached Rs 60 per kilogram in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. Prices in private trade are even higher, causing inconvenience to consumers. Let's explore this in detail.
Though onions have been made available by the government at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per kilogram, onion prices have still remained high in metro cities. On Tuesday, the retail price of onions ranged between Rs 53 and Rs 60 per kilogram. Onion prices were Rs 53 per kilogram in Delhi as per data from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. On the other hand, in Mumbai, onions cost Rs 58 per kilogram, while their prices were Rs 60 per kilogram in Kolkata and Chennai.
All India Average Retail Price of Onion was Rs 54.2 per kilogram as on September 22nd. The maximum price was Rs 100 per kilogram, while the minimum was Rs 29 per kilogram. However, prices in private trade data were substantially higher than those released by the ministry.
In Delhi, retail prices were in the range of ₹60-₹70 per kilogram depending upon the quality and region. This was higher than ₹53 per kilogram quoted by the ministry for the national capital. Retail onion prices have been stable even after intervention from the central government. The government is making efforts to increase domestic supplies by subsidizing the sale of buffer stocks in Delhi and over 50 other cities across the nation.
