National Award-winning costume designer Neeta Lulla has shared rare archival context behind one of 1990s Hindi cinema's most recognizable fashion moments: Karisma Kapoor’s stage ensemble in the hit track "Tan Tana Tan" from the 1997 action-comedy Judwaa.
In a detailed retrospective shared via her official social media channels, Lulla broke down the creative process that defined the aesthetic for Kapoor’s character, Mala, during the film’s high-energy musical sequences. The designer highlighted how a mix of planned tailoring and personal wardrobe improvisation birthed a look that ultimately set late-90s street and performance trends across South Asia.
According to Lulla, the brief from director David Dhawan called for an "uber-stylish and glam" visual direction that aligned with global pop music aesthetics of the era.
"In the '90s, bodysuits paired with Doc Martens boots were deeply trend-setting," Lulla noted during her reflection on the production. "We custom-built a fitted velvet bodysuit for Karisma, but during the pre-shoot trial, we struggled to find a bolero or short jacket that complemented the silhouette properly."
The breakthrough occurred during a fitting session held at Lulla’s home studio, where Kapoor personally suggested raiding the designer's personal closet for alternative options.
"When Karisma arrived for fittings, she suggested opening my wardrobe to see what was available," Lulla recalled. "We unearthed a metallic bolero—a structured, short-cropped jacket featuring a polished sheen—that I had completely forgotten I owned. We paired it immediately with the velvet bodysuit, and the final look was locked."
Writing on the archival significance of the costume, Lulla emphasized that styling during Bollywood's late-20th-century transition relied heavily on instinct, personal risk, and subverting established sartorial norms. The combination of tactile velvet, rigid metallic outerwear, and heavy footwear created a contrast that felt distinctly forward-thinking for Indian commercial cinema in 1997.
Judwaa, directed by David Dhawan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, featured Salman Khan in a dual role alongside Kapoor and Rambha, supported by an ensemble cast including Kader Khan, Anupam Kher, Shakti Kapoor, and Dalip Tahil. The film itself was an adaptation of the 1994 Telugu hit Hello Brother, drawing broader narrative inspiration from Jackie Chan's 1992 Hong Kong martial arts comedy Twin Dragons.
