Asian champion and multiple ISSF medalist won the doubles title in the men's air pistol event
National Shooting Championship: Varun Tomar won the doubles title in the senior and junior men's 10m air pistol events at the 67th National Shooting Championship.
Current Asian champion and multiple ISSF medalist Varun Tomar won the doubles title in the senior and junior men's 10m air pistol events at the 67th National Shooting Championship (NSCC) being played at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in the national capital.
The 21-year-old Army shooter, who missed out on a place in the Paris Olympics team last year, recovered from a slow start in the senior men's final to win his first national title by defeating his teammate Pradyuman Singh, who missed out by 0.8 points. Akash Bhardwaj of Rajasthan won the bronze medal.
He had a poor start in the junior final too, but then raced ahead and stayed within touching distance of silver winner Nikhil Saroha of Uttar Pradesh, who was on a start-to-finish mission. His patience finally paid off after the 21st shot, as Nikhil shot 8.5, giving the senior pro an easy double in the end.
He shot 238 in the senior final, but was clearly more confident in the junior final, shooting with greater precision for a final score of 246.2. Pradyumna capped a successful day with a second medal, a bronze in the junior men's air pistol.
Uttar Pradesh took the gold-silver position in the youth final where Chirag Sharma defeated 14-year-old Dev Pratap by a margin of 1.3 after 24 shots. Chirag shot 241.8. Mayank Chaudhary of Rajasthan won the bronze medal. Haryana, Rajasthan and Maharashtra are placed 1-2-3 in the medal tally in the pistol national event with 23,2,2 and 13 gold medals respectively.
