TRAI and DoT Join Hands to Expose Unknown Callers with New CNAP Feature
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have decided to introduce a new feature to protect mobile users from fraudulent calls. The caller's name, as recorded in KYC, will now appear on the screen. This feature will be enabled by default and can be disabled by users.
Are you also plagued by unknown number calls nowadays? Here's some happy news for you. Now, not only will the caller's number but also their name be shown on your mobile screen. Just like Truecaller, which warns you of any incoming call, this time you won't require any third-party app.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have made the decision to roll out this new system to check mobile call fraud as well as fraudulent calls. You can now view the name of the caller.
Here, only the name that the user has provided in their KYC for their mobile number will be shown. Additionally, this feature will be enabled by default, though users have an option to disable it if they want. Last year, this service was trialed in the Mumbai and Haryana circles.

In February 2024, TRAI proposed a service called 'Calling Name Presentation (CNAP).' It stated that this feature would only be enabled if the customer requested it. Following this, the DoT suggested to TRAI that this feature should be available to all users by default. However, if desired, the service could be disabled by request. Ultimately, TRAI accepted DoT's opinion. Both departments have now agreed on this decision.
According to reports, the names of those who have availed of the Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR) feature will not be displayed on the screen. This exemption will be specifically granted to intelligence agencies, VIPs, and select individuals. Anyone who applies for CLIR will be thoroughly vetted.
