Steps to a quintessential staircase
Vastu Shastra recommends the use of the following parameters for the construction of a flawless staircase:
Placement and Installation:
1. According to Vastu Shastra, the square and rectangular staircase, bending at the right angle are best for internal or external affairs.
2. The stairs should turn up clockwise.
3. The face of climbing stairs should be in either south or west direction.
4. Stairs can be built in the north-west to south-west zone and south-west to southeast zone. The ideal direction for construction of stairs in the house is south-west, south and west are the next best options.
5. There must be no rising stairs in front of the main door.
Number of Steps in a staircase
1. The appropriate number of steps for the staircase is equal to the number of stairs.
2. Divided by 3, the remainder should be 2. For eg. 5, 11, 17, 23, etc.
3. The number of steps for a rising staircase should not end with a 0. For eg. 10, 20, 30, etc.
Steer Clear of
1. Do not place a worship room under the stairs.
2. Do not put pictures of god under the stairs.
3. Avoid the construction of the kitchen under the stairs.
4. Avoid the construction of a washroom under the stairs.
5. Do not place a bed under the stairs.
6. Avoid putting a locker under the staircase.
7. Avoid placing a workstation under the stairs.
8. Do not build stairs in the center (Brahmasthan) of the house.
9. The staircase must not be in the anti-clockwise direction as it has an impact on career, and physical/mental health of family members, especially women.
10. Stairs must not be constructed in the north-east corners of the house whether they are indoor or outdoor.
