His father, Shri Ishwarlal Gulabbhai Desai, was a prominent Congress leader and freedom fighter, while his late uncle, Shri Khandubhai Desai, served as a Union Cabinet Minister under Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Indira Gandhi.
