Supreme Court's big decision, refugees from Bangladesh will get citizenship in India
Citizenship Act S.6A: A five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act.
On Thursday, October 17, 2024, a significant hearing over Section 6A of the Citizenship Act took place in the Supreme Court's Constitution Bench. In 1985, a change to the Citizenship Act, intended to advance the Assam Accord, was upheld by a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court as being constitutionally legitimate.
Justice JB Pardiwala dissented from the majority decision, which was delivered by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices Suryakant, MM Sundaresh, and Manoj Mishra.
In order to extend citizenship benefits to illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who arrived in Assam between January 1, 1966, and March 25, 1971, Section 6A was included to the Assam Accord in 1985.
