Gulveer Singh Wins Historic Double Medals at CWG

Singh ran a measured race and produced a strong final-lap kick, moving from equal-fifth position into third place to claim the bronze. The 28-year-old Armyman from Atrauli in Uttar Pradesh was eighth after the first lap (1:10.6), improved to fourth by the 1000 m mark, briefly dropped to seventh near the halfway stage, and then surged in the closing stages to finish third.

A bronze medallist in the 10,000 m at the 2022 Asian Games and a double gold medallist in the 5000 m and 10,000 m at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, Singh has steadily established himself as India’s premier distance runner.

His journey began on village roads and farmland trails while preparing for recruitment into the Indian Army. After joining The Grenadiers Regiment in 2018 he rose through the ranks of Indian athletics. He first made an international mark with a bronze in the 5000 m at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships.

A prolific record-breaker, Singh holds the Indian national records in the 5000 m, 10,000 m, one mile and half marathon. In 2025 he became the first Indian to run a sub-four-minute mile (3:55.63) and the first to complete a half marathon in under 60 minutes (59:42). He also set an Asian record by clocking 12:59.77 for 5000 m indoors, becoming the first Asian athlete to break the 13-minute barrier.

Based at the high-performance centre in Colorado Springs, Singh has emerged as a trailblazer for Indian distance running. His double medal haul in Glasgow further elevates India’s presence on the global distance-running stage and reinforces his status as one of the country’s strongest medal prospects at major championships.
