Before Kagiso Rabada, Bert Vogler held the record for the highest individual score at number 11 for South Africa in Test cricket. Vogler scored an unbeaten 62 while batting at number 11 for South Africa in the first innings against England in Cape Town in 1906.
South Africa scored 404 runs in the first innings thanks to half-centuries from Tristan Stubbs (76), Tony de Giorgi (55), Senuran Muthusamy (89 not out), and Kagiso Rabada (71). This gave South Africa a 71-run lead over Pakistan on the basis of the first innings.
Earlier, after winning the toss and batting first, Pakistan scored 333 runs in the first innings thanks to half-centuries from Abdullah Shafique (57), Shan Masood (87), and Saud Shakeel (66).
