Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations Reports EV Share Rising in Auto Market
Sales of electric cars and two-wheelers saw a significant increase in April 2026. The new battery rental system (Battery as a Service) and the increasing number of charging stations are the main reasons for this surge.
In April 2026, electric car sales increased by 75% year-on-year, while electric two-wheeler sales increased by 60.73%. Experts say that the adoption of the new battery rental service is driving the rapid growth in sales of both electric cars and two-wheelers. Furthermore, the increasing number of charging stations is also encouraging this growth.
With the rise of Battery-as-a-Service (BAS), electric car sales are expected to increase further. Currently, companies ranging from Tata Motors to Maruti Suzuki, among others, are providing electric car battery services. Under this service, battery charges are waived upon purchase, reducing the cost of the electric car.
Companies charge a rental fee for the battery upon use. This rental rate varies across companies. Some companies charge 3 rupees per kilometer, while others charge 3.5 to 6 rupees per kilometer.
