South Africa defeated Afghanistan by nine wickets in the first semi-final of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Afghanistan was restricted to 56 runs when batting first in this match on Thursday at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. South Africa replied with 60 runs in 8.5 overs for the cost of one wicket. South Africa has advanced to the World Cup final for the first time. Afghanistan's coach, Jonathan Trott, criticised the pitch utilised during the encounter.

In the post-match press conference, Jonathan Trott said, "I don't want to get myself into trouble. I also don't want to say that the grapes are sour. This is not the pitch on which you want to play a match or a World Cup semi-final." He said, "It should have been a fair match. I am not saying that the pitch should be completely flat, with no spin and no seam movement. What I am saying is that you batsmen should not worry about moving forward. They should trust their foot movement. In T20 cricket, you have to attack and score runs and take wickets."

Jonathan Trott said, "The opposition team bowled well. If we had bowled straight like South Africa, I think you would have seen a very interesting second half as well. We came back to the hotel at 3 o'clock and then we had to leave 5 hours later at 8 o'clock, so we did not get much sleep. This was the reason why the players were tired. We knew about the schedule, so we are not making any excuses. When you go to the World Cup or any tournament, you cannot have everything your way. You have to fight and play against those problems. We did this many times and we are proud of it."
