PM Modi to Host Japan PM Sanae Takaichi for 16th India-Japan Summit, Focus on Indo-Pacific and Economic Security

It remains unclear which future plans will be chosen by both nations that already explore many opportunities for cooperation within the Indo-Pacific.

As per the Ministry of External Affairs, the summit will give an opportunity for reviewing and strengthening all aspects of their bilateral cooperation.

There will also be an exchange of views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. This visit follows Prime Minister Modi's trip to Tokyo in August 2025 (for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit) and reflects the shared commitment to further advancing the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

A 'Global Partnership' was established between India and Japan in 2000, which was upgraded to a 'Strategic and Global Partnership' in 2006. Subsequently, in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe elevated the relationship to a 'Special Strategic and Global Partnership,' further enhancing its significance.

This partnership is founded on a shared vision of a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific, as well as on democratic values, a rules-based international order, and economic security. Cooperation between the two nations is underway in areas such as defense and security (joint exercises, defense equipment and technology collaboration, logistics), economic cooperation (economic agreements), infrastructure (bullet train), semiconductors, critical minerals, and clean energy. Both countries are also members of the Quad grouping, alongside the United States and Australia.

A meeting of Quad foreign ministers was recently held in New Delhi, attended by the Japanese Foreign Minister. During the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit held last year, a decision was reached regarding the strategic vision for the coming decade, identifying eight key areas:

Economic partnership, economic security, mobility, environmental sustainability, innovation and technology, health, people-to-people cooperation, and cooperation between states and prefectures.

That meeting also saw a decision to secure $68 billion in Japanese investment in India over the next decade. These decisions were aimed at making the cooperation between the two countries concrete and action-oriented.

The 16th summit is expected to focus on advancing the 2025 vision and addressing issues such as economic security, energy, critical minerals, defense, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. A high-level Japanese business delegation is also visiting India alongside Prime Minister Takaichi.
