Modi at Ramnath Goenka Lecture: ‘Macaulay Destroyed Indian Education, We Must Undo the Damage’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has already linked the countrymen with several nationwide resolutions, right from cleanliness to self-reliant India, has now placed another resolution before the nation. He stated that, way back in 1835, British MP Macaulay initiated a strong campaign to uproot India from its roots.

Thus, it completely destroyed the Indian education system. We have to resolve in the next ten years to liberate India from the slavery mentality Macaulay has instilled into it. He called for completing this journey, which began in 1835, by 2035. Addressing the sixth Ramnath Goenka Lecture, Modi said that in 1835, British MP Macaulay declared that he would create Indians who would be Indians in appearance but English at heart.

To achieve this, Macaulay completely destroyed the Indian education system. India suffered the consequences for centuries to come. Macaulay shattered our self-confidence and instilled a sense of inferiority within us. He said that it was there that the seeds were sown that if Indians wanted to progress, they would have to adopt foreign methods.
