Patel also announced that the Biovigilance Programme of India has been approved, under which the IPC will strengthen the reporting, assessment, monitoring and prevention of adverse events associated with medicines and biological products used in organ and tissue transplantation, including products administered to both donors and recipients. This marks a specific and previously underdeveloped area of safety monitoring, extending pharmacovigilance principles into the more specialised domain of transplant medicine.

Digital Access for the New Formulary

The 7th Edition of the NFI has also been made available digitally through NFI Online, the statement from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said, making the updated formulary more accessible to healthcare practitioners and institutions across the country.

A Focus on Rational Medicine Use

The minister underscored that rational use of medicines and continuous safety monitoring are integral to public health, and that every patient must receive the right medicine, of assured quality, framing this principle as the underlying rationale connecting all of the day's various announcements and initiatives.

Building an Indigenous Safety-Monitoring Ecosystem

Patel said India has built a strong indigenous ecosystem capable of generating, collecting, processing and analysing medicine-safety data from across the country. She described this capacity as an important dimension of Atmanirbhar Bharat in healthcare, enabling India to generate its own scientific evidence to support the safe and effective use of medicines, rather than relying primarily on safety data generated in other countries.

A Significant Global Ranking Improvement

Patel said the country has moved from the 123rd position during 2009-2014 to 8th globally in contributions to the WHO patient safety database. She said India's transition from relying primarily on safety information generated elsewhere to producing and contributing its own pharmacovigilance evidence reflects a significant strengthening of national capacity, a shift that carries implications not just for India's domestic healthcare system but for its standing within the broader global pharmacovigilance community.

Expanding Safety Monitoring Across Multiple Domains

The pharmacovigilance, materiovigilance and biovigilance initiatives will strengthen safety monitoring across medicines, medical devices and transplant procedures, the statement noted, indicating that India's safety monitoring infrastructure is being deliberately expanded to cover an increasingly broad range of healthcare interventions rather than remaining focused narrowly on pharmaceutical drugs alone.

Digital Tools Improving Accessibility and Transparency

Patel said digital initiatives, including NFI Online, IP Online, the ADR-PvPI 2.0 Mobile App and the Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring System (ADRMS), are making medicine-related information and adverse-event reporting more accessible, transparent and responsive. This growing suite of digital tools reflects a broader strategy of using technology to streamline both public access to medicine safety information and the reporting process for adverse events, potentially encouraging greater participation from healthcare professionals and the public alike in strengthening the country's overall pharmacovigilance system.
