HSRP Number Plate: Deadline for installing high-security number plates in Maharashtra extended again
HSRP Number Plate: Car owners were originally required to switch to HSRP by March 31 this year, which was later extended to April 30, and now it has been extended to June 30, 2025. After the deadline, unauthorized plates will attract a fine of Rs 1,000 under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Maharashtra Transport Department has also extended the deadline for installing high-security registration plates (HSRP) further. Vehicle owners with earlier registrations before April 1, 2019, had earlier been required to get HSRP installed until March 31, 2024. Which later got extended until April 30, and now this deadline has been extended until June 30, 2025. It has been done because the HSRP implementation process is moving at a slow pace.
This rule is especially for old vehicles registered before 2019, which have not been fitted with HSRP as yet. Most vehicles are still on the road sans HSRP, and thus, the deadline has been extended to give vehicle owners enough time to escape fines and abide by the rule. With this rule, after its implementation, fancy number plates will also be illegal, as there are some designs that one cannot even decipher. After the deadline, a fine of Rs 1,000 will be imposed as per Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 for unauthorized number plates.
HSRP is a number plate with a special security feature, which has a 10-digit unique laser-branded ID number and laser-etched code. Due to this this plate is tamper-proof. It is made of rare aluminum alloy and has IND badging, on which the hologram of Ashok Chakra is hot-stamped. In addition, the plate has a reflective film on which "INDIA" is imprinted.
For cars, an additional chromium-based hologram sticker is applied to the windshield, which records the vehicle's registration details. The move is aimed at preventing fake number plates, enhancing vehicle security, and curbing theft.
New vehicles already have HSRP installed. But vehicles registered before 2019 will have to get this plate installed separately. Vehicle owners in Maharashtra will have to get HSRP installed only from authorized vendors who are registered with the transport department. The list of authorized vendors is available on the VAHAN portal, from where vehicle owners can book HSRP for their vehicle by taking information.
