Gmail Gets Major AI Upgrade With Gemini-Powered Search and Email Summaries

Google is launching a broad set of Gemini-driven artificial intelligence (AI) features in Gmail. This was revealed by the tech giant on Thursday. According to the company, Gmail is now entering the "Geminiera." One of the most significant is the incorporation of the AI Overview in the manner in which the search experience and summary in the thread are accomplished. Google is also launching the AI-driven inbox. Users will be treated to the priority e-mails as well as the to-do lists. Some features have been made available for the non-paying Gmail subscribers.

In a blog, the technology giant announced a number of new features in the use of artificial intelligence for email services. Although most were for GoogleAIPro or subscribers to AI Ultra, two features are now accessible by all. The new features are initially rolling out in the English language in the US and will expand to additional regions and languages ​​in the coming months.

One of the key features is AI Overview, which will now power two key features within Gmail. First, it will answer natural-language questions about the inbox in a small box just below the search bar, similar to how it appears in Google Search. This will eliminate the need for keyword-based searches or scrolling through their emails to find information, as emails related to plain text queries will appear. The second is the ability to summarize long email threads into key points.

Notably, the email summarization capability will be rolled out to all users; However, natural-language search is only available to Google's AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. It's currently available in the US.

In addition, the tech giant is adding new tools focused on email composition and replies. Help Me Write is a drafting tool that generates or refines email text based on a simple prompt or the context of an ongoing conversation. Additionally, Gmail will offer Suggested Replies, an advanced version of the classic Smart Reply functionality, which provides quick, context-aware responses that users can edit before sending. Both features are being made available free to all users, while a new Proofread feature with advanced grammar and tone suggestions will be available in Google's paid AI plans.

Google is also testing a new AI inbox view that acts more like a proactive assistant than a traditional list of messages. It appears above the old inbox tab, and shows high-priority emails and to-dos that require the user's immediate attention, such as upcoming meetings, important bills, or urgent conversations. To do this, Gemini analyzes the email's content, but Google says this processing happens securely, with privacy protections provided by the company.
