Having previously set the record for the world's quickest production vehicle, BYD's YangWang U9 electric supercar is back in the spotlight. This time, it has established a new quickest lap record at Germany's famous Nurburgring circuit. This special production version, called the U9 Xtreme, is the quickest and most potent version of the electric supercar, lapping the Nordschleife circuit in 6 minutes 59.157 seconds.

With this, it became the globe's first electric super sports car to go under 7 minutes on this track. It beat the Rimac Nevera's record by close to 5 seconds. While quicker electric vehicles have been tested on the track, they are considered prototypes, and as a result, they were not meant for mass sale.

This record run occurred on August 22, 2025, when it was previously known as the YangWang U9 Track Edition. At that time, the car also held the record for being the world's fastest production vehicle. The company later changed its name to the U9 Xtreme, the most powerful version of this electric supercar.

In August 2025, BYD reported that the U9 had achieved a top speed of 472.41 km/h. In the second run in September, this speed reached 496.22 km/h.

However, the car that set the lap record at the Nurburgring track received some modifications. More attention was paid to aerodynamics and downforce to maintain balance and grip on the track.

The U9 Xtreme is built on BYD's E4 platform. It is the world's first EV to operate on a 1200-volt architecture. It features four electric motors (a quad-motor AWD system) that together produce a whopping 2,950 bhp.

Its power-to-weight ratio exceeds 1,200 bhp per ton. This means this car is a silent rocket in terms of performance.

BYD has announced that only 30 units of the U9 Xtreme will be produced worldwide. This means that this car is not only fast and technologically advanced, but has also become a collector's dream machine.
