Tesla's much-anticipated robotaxi service launched in Austin, Texas, on Sunday afternoon. Customers will be charged a one-time fee of $4.20. This is seen as an effort to position Tesla as a leader in automated driving technology.
Musk stated on social media on Sunday that Tesla's robotaxi service represents the future of his electric car company. Initially, only 10 cars will operate in Austin with a human safety driver. Several driverless Tesla vehicles were spotted in Austin's South Congress area on Sunday morning. The driver's seat was empty in these vehicles, but a person was sitting in the passenger seat.
Tesla plans to place safety monitors in the front seat, though it is unclear how much control they will have over the vehicles. Videos of driverless Teslas have also been circulated on social media, but it is unknown whether they had passengers.
On Friday, Governor Greg Abbott signed a law requiring state permits for the operation of autonomous vehicles. This law will take effect on September 1. Democratic lawmakers urged Tesla to halt robotaxi testing due to this law. Tesla and the governor's office have not yet responded for comment.
