Indian team batting coach Vikram Rathod had a new role during the tenure of the former captain of the head coach Rahul Dravid. After separating from the Indian team, Rathod has now been appointed as the batting coach of New Zealand for the only Test against Afghanistan between 9 and 13 September at the Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground.

Rathod, who played six Tests for India in the late 90s before becoming the national team selector in 2012, was lately in the support staff of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup 2024. Besides this, New Zealand has roped in Sri Lankan spin legend Rangana Herath as spin-bowling coach for the upcoming three Test matches in Asia. He came in place of former Pakistan spinner and coach Saqlain Mushtaq.

Herath was one of the best orthodox Test spinners in the world. He will stay with the team during the two ICC World Test Championship (WTC) matches in his homeland Sri Lanka later this month. Head coach Gary Stead said that Herath and Rathod won't only bring new knowledge to the group but will give information about local conditions as well.

Gary Stead said, 'We are really excited to include Rangana and Vikram in our Test group. Both are highly respected in the cricket world and I know our players are really looking forward to the opportunity to learn from them.

"Especially for our three left-arm orthodox spinners, Ejaz, Mitch, and Rachin, the opportunity to work with Rangana in three Tests on the subcontinent will be extremely beneficial," he said. "Rangana has taken over 100 Test wickets at Galle, the venue for our two Tests against Sri Lanka, and so his knowledge of that venue will be invaluable," he added.

Last month, Afghanistan appointed Ramakrishnan Sridhar as the national team's assistant coach for the upcoming one-off Test against New Zealand and the three-match ODI series against South Africa.
