The UK implemented a digital travel system from Wednesday. This includes compulsory e-visas for Indian nationals and Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for those who do not require a visa. The new process eliminates the need for paper visa stickers as part of the phased introduction over the years.

While the new system will require a visit to an application center for biometric registration, it will eliminate the need to leave passport documents during the processing period. Mike Tapp, UK's Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, said, "I would urge all travelers to ensure they are fully prepared for travel and have the correct permissions."

The cost of eTAs (round-trip) in the UK is very competitive and comparable to other nations. These are expected to include the US ESTA fee of $40 and the ETIAS fee of the EU at €20.

As part of the efforts to ensure that the British border and immigration process is fully digital, passports with biometric residence permits (BRPs), visa vignette stickers, or ink stamps are now part of the new process. Those with biometric residence cards (BRCs) as proof of immigration rights are also part of the fully digital UKVI system. All those using biometric residence cards (BRCs) as proof of immigration rights have also been moved to the fully online UKVI system.

The UK Home Office stated that more than 10 million e-visas have been issued to date. It added that all e-visa holders, including those with European Union (EU) Settlement Scheme status, must keep their UKVI account updated with the latest passport details. Visitors to 85 countries, including visa-free countries like the US, Canada, and France, will now be required to have eTAs.

The eTA is also mandatory for passengers traveling to the UK who take connecting flights and pass through passport control. According to official figures, since the eTA was introduced in October 2023, more than 19 million passengers have successfully applied, and over £383 million in revenue has been raised to reinvest in the UK border and immigration system.

The UK Home Office stated that the implementation of the eTA scheme is a significant step towards the digitization of the immigration system and paves the way for a contactless UK border in the future. The scheme also helps to keep the border secure.
