Today is the last day to deposit Rs 2,000 notes in a bank account or exchange them for other denomination notes. After the meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of RBI, Governor Shaktikanta Das said that Rs 2,000 notes worth more than Rs 12,000 crore are still in circulation.

RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes on May 19 this year. Last week itself, RBI had extended the date for depositing or exchanging Rs 2,000 notes in bank accounts to October 7.

RBI Governor said that out of the total notes returned so far, 87 percent of notes have been deposited in bank accounts, while the remaining notes have been exchanged through various counters. So far, notes worth more than Rs 3.43 lakh crore have been returned.

The Governor said that from October 8, Rs 2,000 notes can be exchanged at 19 regional offices of RBI. Only Rs 20,000 notes (10 Rs 2,000 notes) will be exchanged at a time in these offices. People whose homes are away from these offices can also avail the facility of transferring their notes directly to their bank account by sending them to the RBI office by post.
