Three-Language Formula Under NEP: Centre Clarifies No Language Will Be Imposed, CBSE Rules Explained
The Ministry of Education has clarified to the Supreme Court that the three-language formula under the New Education Policy is intended to promote multilingualism and preserve Indian languages, not to impose any language on anyone.
In response to queries regarding the implementation of the 'three-language formula' at school level under the new National Education Policy (NEP), the Union Ministry of Education clarified that the idea is not about imposition of language but rather promotion of different languages including Indian languages.
While the case is still pending before the Supreme Court in regard to the issue, the ministry filed an affidavit on Monday, where it informed its stand. According to the New National Education Policy, the Ministry recommends learning three languages in schools where two languages shall be Indian languages. This new policy is now implemented in schools.
The CBSE has informed the schools what should be done. The scheme would be implemented from classes 6 to 10. However, for the students who are currently studying in class 10, there are some exceptions. These students won't need to learn the third language nor will take any board examination in respect of it. Students of classes 7, 8, and 9 would have to learn the third language, however, there would not be any board examination in respect of it when they will be studying in class 10.
