Supreme Court notice to Gurmeet Ram Rahim; CBI has challenged the decision by the High Court

The Supreme Court has issued notice to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was acquitted after the High Court's decision in the much-discussed Ranjit Singh murder case. In May 2024, the Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted Ram Rahim in the murder case. The High Court's decision was challenged in the Supreme Court by the CBI, which is investigating the murder case. Now the Supreme Court has issued notice to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others.

On the evening of 10 July 2002, the manager of Sirsa Dera, Ranjit Singh, was shot dead. In 2003, the investigation of this case was handed over to the CBI. After the investigation, the CBI sentenced Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim to life imprisonment. The High Court rejected the CBI's sentence and acquitted Ram Rahim. The High Court had said that the gun from which the firing was said to have been done was deposited in the armory at the time of the incident. The car used in the crime was also not recovered. According to eyewitnesses, four people were firing in the car, so where are the other three weapons. The High Court said that the investigation was vague and the evidence presented was not reliable. Based on all this, the High Court accepted the petition of the five accused and acquitted them.

Jagseer Singh, son of Ranjit Singh, not getting satisfaction from the police investigation, filed a petition in the High Court in January 2003, demanding an inquiry by CBI. The High Court gave orders in favor of the son and handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI. Investigation of the case was conducted by the CBI, then there was the registration of a case against five people including Ram Rahim. While the court had framed charges against the accused in 2007, initially the name of the Dera chief was not there in this case. But after handing over the investigation to the CBI in 2003, in 2006, the Dera chief's name was included in this murder case on the basis of the statement of Ram Rahim's driver Khatta Singh.
