On Wednesday, the Supreme Court expressed displeasure over the free schemes of the parties during the elections. Taking a dig at the free promises made by political parties during elections, the SC said that people are not ready to work, because they are getting free ration and money. Freebies lead to a lack of work among people and efforts should be made to include homeless people in mainstream society. So that they can contribute and work.
Hearing a petition, a bench of Justices BR Gavai and AG Masih said, 'Unfortunately, due to these free facilities, people are not ready to work. They are getting a free ration. They are getting money without working.
Attorney General R. Venkataramani, appearing for the Center, told the court that the Central Government is in the process of finalizing the Urban Poverty Eradication Mission, which will address various issues including shelter for urban homeless. The bench said, we appreciate your concern for them, but would it not be better if they are made a part of the mainstream of society and allowed to contribute to the development of the nation. The court said that giving free things increases the tendency of not working in the minds of people. Efforts should be made to include homeless people in mainstream society so that those people are able to contribute and work.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasized last month the need to have an accepted and legal solution to stop the announcements of free schemes by political parties ahead of election campaigns. Rajiv Kumar had said that our proforma is on our website. Now the time has come to accept it and find legal answers, but at this time our hands are tied because the matter is pending in the court.
The bench ordered the Attorney General to find out from the Centre when the mission for the removal of urban poverty would be accomplished. The Supreme Court has fixed six weeks' time for the hearing of the case.
