There is already mandatory hallmarking of gold in the country, so there will be no major crisis in terms of silver. The BIS chief said, hallmarking of silver will protect consumer rights. They will get assurance of 100 percent purity of silver. Shopkeepers will also not be able to cheat customers. Customer confidence will be strengthened, and they will get rid of expensive goods made from adulterated metal. Silver hallmarking will have the BIS mark, quality standard, and HUID number. The government has fixed six levels of purity of silver, on the basis of which the purity of the metal can be tested.
Earlier, on September 4, the Central Government had said that voluntary hallmarking had started for silver jewelry and other items from September 1. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has revised the hallmarking standard with the publication of IS 2112:2025. It will replace the earlier IS 2112:2014 version. According to the statement, under the new system, consumers can identify the type, purity grade, hallmarking date, testing center details, and jeweler registration number of silver jewelry hallmarked after September 1, 2025, using the BIS Care mobile application. Seven purity grades have been included in the revised standard, including two new ones.
