The government is working on a plan to make it mandatory for domestic airlines to share weather data captured by aircraft during takeoff and landing with the IMD. An official gave this information. Union Earth Sciences Ministry Secretary M Ravichandran said that his ministry is discussing the matter with the Ministry of Civil Aviation. He said that within a year it will be made mandatory for domestic airlines to provide weather data.

Ravichandran said, "It has to be made mandatory. It is very useful not only for airline operations but also for weather forecasting everywhere." He said that the weather forecast depends on the observations collected. The secretary of the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences said, "The more observations we have, the better our predictions can be. It is like an exit poll. If you collect data from different places, you will get a clear picture. Similarly, our goal is to collect information about temperature, humidity, and wind wherever possible."

Weather balloons launched at 50-60 stations by the Indian Meteorological Department provided data on temperature, humidity, and wind at various altitudes. Aircraft record weather during takeoff and landing. According to Ravichandran, all aircraft on international routes have to provide the data because of a legally binding. Domestic aircraft do not have that requirement. This is a part of the national program in most of the developed countries, mandating their aircraft to supply this type of data, and a similar system needs to be instituted in India. The Indian Meteorological Department would turn 150 years old on January 15, having been set up way back in 1875.
