This process can take 5 to 30 minutes, but it keeps running in the background.
OpenAI has made available for free a lightweight variant of its strongest Deep Research tool for all ChatGPT users. All Free, Plus, Team, and Pro users are included. It relies on the o4-mini model. While not being as robust as the old Advanced Deep Research, the lightweight variant can perform live research and gather information from the internet. It loads lightly on OpenAI's system and is also more affordable.

How to use Deep Research?
- Select the “Deep Research” option in ChatGPT.
- Type your question.
- If you want, you can also upload PDF or Excel files so that AI can get more context.
OpenAI has said that in the coming time, visual elements like charts and data visualization will be added to the Deep Research tool, so that the report becomes easier to understand, although OpenAI has also put some limit on how many questions a user can ask for free. Free users can ask 5 questions in a month.
