The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has put a reward of Rs 2 lakh each on the heads of two absconding Madhya Pradesh police personnel, Sanjiv Singh Mavai and Uttam Singh Kushwaha. The case pertains to the death of Deva Pardhi in police custody at the Myana police station in Guna district, announced officials on Wednesday.

Officials said Sanjeet Singh Mavai was posted as an Inspector at the time, and Uttam Singh Kushwaha as an Assistant Sub-Inspector. Deva Pardhi was detained on charges of theft. He died under suspicious circumstances in police custody. The CBI has already arrested Sub-Inspector Devraj Singh Parihar, Inspector Zubair Khan, and another man and filed a charge sheet in the case. However, Mavai and Kushwaha are still absconding.

A CBI spokesperson stated that non-bailable warrants have been issued against the two policemen, and they have been declared "proclaimed offenders." He explained that the reward was announced to generate credible information from the public and lead to the arrest of the accused.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court was critical of the CBI in this case. The court questioned the CBI why the two policemen had not been arrested yet. The court further threatened thata  contempt action might be taken if no action was taken in this case.

A bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and R. Mahadevan was hearing a contempt petition filed by the mother of the 24-year-old victim. The petition stated that despite the court's order of May 15, the CBI had not yet made any arrests. The court transferred the investigation from the Madhya Pradesh Police to the CBI.

The Supreme Court directed the CBI to arrest both policemen within a month. It also warned that if anything happened to Ganga Ram, the victim's only eyewitness, the agency would not be spared. Ganga Ram is currently in judicial custody. Regarding Ganga Ram's safety, the court stated that it did not want to see another custodial death.

Deva Pardhi was arrested along with his uncle Ganga Ram on charges of theft. Deva Pardhi's mother alleges that the police tortured and killed her son. However, the police claim he died of a heart attack.
