“Big Decision Needed”: Manoj Tiwari on Gambhir’s Future as India Coach

T20 World Cup 2026: If India doesn't win the T20 World Cup, the BCCI will remove Gautam Gambhir from his position as head coach. This claim has been made by former player Manoj Tiwari. He stated that Team India is in a bad shape in ODIs and Tests, and if the same happens in T20s, Gambhir's departure is certain.

A big statement was made by former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwari, stating that if India's strategy of defending the T20 World Cup fails and the Indian cricket team does not win the title in front of its own fans, then the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might take a drastic decision of relieving the head coach of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir. Under the coaching of Gambhir, India has not lost a single series in the T20 format. However, Gambhir is under a lot of pressure because of the poor performance of the Indian cricket team in Tests and ODIs.

It is worth mentioning here that since Gambhir took charge as the head coach in July 2024, India has lost two home test series against New Zealand and South Africa. Not only that, they also lost to a weak Kiwi team in the three-match ODI series. Therefore, the T20 World Cup is very important for Gambhir, and if this campaign goes poorly, the current coach is sure to face the consequences.

Manoj Tiwari told InsideSport that if India does not win the T20 World Cup, he believes the BCCI should make a big and difficult decision regarding Gautam Gambhir. Although the Board Secretary has already stated that Gambhir will remain until his contract expires, and there is no question of removing him. However, he believes that if the 2026 T20 World Cup fails, the Board will make a big decision by removing him.

Tiwari also believes that if Gambhir is removed from the position of head coach in the future, the BCCI should try to persuade former Indian batsman VVS Laxman to take on the role. Tiwari believes that Laxman, with his extensive experience, would be the most suitable person to take over from Gambhir.

He further said, "I think this should be a process-driven thing. When Rahul Dravid was the coach and didn't go on some tours, VVS Laxman would go. So he was the natural choice. He's a calm person and a good human being. He also has coaching experience, so we should try to persuade him."
